On April 3 IBM quietly announced breakthrough technology for in-memory optimized analytic database processing to provide massive simplification and acceleration of analytic processing without specialized hardware. It’s called “BLU Acceleration” and it’s built into the kernel of DB2 10.5. This new technology provides breakthrough performance, storage savings and simplicity for analytic workload used for reporting, business intelligence and data mining. Customer after customer is reporting seeing 20x-50x speedup and 10x-20x storage savings all without any tuning.
For the past several years I’ve been privileged to work on this technology along with IBM colleagues at numerous laboratories around the world. We’re both excited and proud of the new technology and its ability to provide massive speedup by as much as 50x workload acceleration and individual queries beyond 1000x, dramatic storage savings (some customer reporting more than 24x storage reduction) and all enabled with the easiest technology to deploy that we have every had. “Super Analytics, Super Easy.”
When I was kid, I remember that half the toys my parents bought for me didn’t really work the way they were supposed to. The commercial always showed incredible performance: sensational chemistry kits, slinkies that would climb down stairs, and amazing scooters, toy cars and more. But once you got them home and tried the new toy in your house, it just didn’t behave that way. One day I saw a commercial on TV for a toy with the punchline “It will work as well in your living-room as it does in this commercial”. I thought “WOW! Now THAT is a toy I want.” With BLU Acceleration our customers and business partners are telling us much the same thing… it works as well for them as we said it would.

But I encourage you to do more than just read about it. Lots of companies can say they have good technology – but how many can really deliver on the claims? Give it a try. Witness the simplicity and the power. We’re confident it will work as well in your living-room (or your company) as it did in our lab.
